Static IP: quick checks

Updated 2 min read

Short version: an ISP or datacenter IP keeps one address for its whole term. It never rotates, so session settings meant for rotating proxies do nothing on it.

Is it the IP you paid for?

Ask an IP-echo service a few times through the proxy. Same address every time? Good.

bash
for i in 1 2 3; do curl -sS --proxy "http://HOST:PORT" --proxy-user 'USERNAME:PASSWORD' https://api.ipify.org; echo; done

Different addresses? You're probably not pointed at this proxy's endpoint. Copy the host and port again from the proxy's Connection card in your dashboard.

Want to know how sites see it? Run it through the proxy checker: an ISP IP should read as a consumer internet provider, a datacenter IP as hosting. See Using the free proxy checker. On a wide screen, the dashboard's ISP list also shows each IP's network name in the ASN / ISP column.

One IP looks like one visitor

All your traffic leaves from the same address, so a site that counts requests per IP sees all of it as one visitor. Keep your pace steady and under what the site tolerates. Need more throughput? Spread the work over several IPs.

Blocked on a static IP

A site that blocks a static IP keeps blocking it, because the address doesn't change on its own. Your options:

  • Slow down, send normal browser headers, and keep cookies with this one IP.
  • If the site refuses all hosting ranges, a datacenter IP won't get in however polite you are. An ISP IP will do better.
  • Tell us what's happening with Report an issue on the proxy, or email support@proxymonkey.io with what Blocked by a site? Send us this lists.
